Volcanic hikes

You may not see a smoking volcanic cone ready to expel lava, since the last eruption in Tenerife took place in 1909. However, you will go through a true Mars-like environment, such as Teide National Park. Tenerife is a sort of Noe’s Ark for volcanism. A corner of the planet gathering all the known manifestations of this phenomenon.

This is the most popular trail in Teide National Park, leading to the peak of the volcano, at an altitude of 3,718 metres. The hike starts at three o'clock in the afternoon and finishes at noon the day after.

Although the Southern Menceyatos, among them Abona, were catalogued as Peace Menceyatos because of its pacific subjugation to the Castilians, the inhabitants of the upper zone of present-day Granadilla were the protagonists of the last resistance.

Punta de Teno is located in the Teno Rural Park and from there one has spectacular panoramic views of the peninsula, the coast and lighthouse.
  • Montaña Blanca – Lomo Hurtado – Fortaleza – El Portillo (THU-4) NEW 25/05/2017 - Along the route you will see wide panoramic views of both the slopes of Tigaiga, La Fortaleza, the interior of the Caldera and Teide itself.
  • _NDR3314 Montañeta – Chinyero – Santiago del Teide (FRI-3) 26/05/2017 - The last eruption in Tenerife This route crosses an area where took place one of the latest volcanic eruptions in Tenerife. We will hike over the volcanic ash of the Volcán Chinyero, the last volcanic eruption in Tenerife (1909), there, we will see the first signs of life growing on the lava soil, just like a natural miracle. On the way, we will the see the Volcán Chinyero's lava flows, which contrast with the green of the pine trees.

This is an easy route, ideal for all kind of people. This route offers the opportunity to get the most of the Mount Teide National Park unique flora and fauna. On the way you might see the “alcaudón” (small birds which love eating insects) and beetles such as the “pimelia” (small, black and with bellies).
  • _NDR3293 El Palmar – Santiago del Teide (FRI-5) 26/05/2017 - The walk of traditions. During this route you will enjoy of wonderful views over the Chinyero Volcano, where took place the last Tenerife’s volcanic eruption. This eruption started on November 18th, 1909 and lasted for 10 days. In comparison with other volcanic eruptions in the Canary Islands, this is the one that has registered less lava flows.
