The Teno Rural Park hike is a demanding hike in an area that is home to several population centres: El Palmar, Teno Alto, Las Lagunetas, Las Portelas, Los Carrizales, Masca and Erjos. Those are maintained thanks to – mostly part-time – agricultural and livestock activities and self-comsumption.
In the vicinity of the hamlets old bread and tile ovens can be discovered, as well as communal eras and shelters, typical of areas of traditional livestock, such as those located in Teno Alto.
Until the 1970s, this area of Tenerife had little or no contact with the rest of the island. The local population moved only when necessary and on foot, by roads and sidewalks. This is why Teno has remained a refuge of the traditional way of life based on agriculture and cattle that is adapted to the biodiversity and the climate of the territory.
During this hike we can see several ecosystems that are very important in the Canary Islands, such as the Canarian pine forest, laurisilva, and tabaibales areas. We will be going through places where wheat was threshed more than a century ago.
